Why Shopify math is different

Most marketplaces take a percentage of every sale. Shopify takes a flat monthly plan plus a percentage. That means your effective fee rate drops as volume grows — a store doing 50 orders a month on Basic pays roughly 3.7% + $39 in platform costs on $2,250 of revenue, while a store doing 500 orders pays roughly 3.2% + $39 on $22,500. The plan fee becomes rounding error at scale.

When to move up a plan

Upgrading from Basic to Grow costs $66 more per month but saves 0.2% on every order plus $0.30 stays the same — the 0.2 percentage-point saving breaks even at about $33,000 in monthly card volume through Shopify Payments. Below that, Basic keeps more. The calculator shows the effective platform cut so you can compare plans with your own numbers.

What this leaves out

Apps, themes, domain renewals, ad spend, and returns all come out of the same pocket. Add your monthly app and ad totals to the product-cost row if you want a truer bottom line.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Shopify take per sale?

On Basic through Shopify Payments, 2.9% + $0.30 per online order, plus the $39/month plan spread across your orders. Third-party gateways add another 2.0% of the order value on Basic.

Is Shopify cheaper than Etsy?

It depends on volume. At low volume Etsy's per-sale fees often win; at higher volume Shopify's flat plan beats percentage marketplaces. Run the same sale through our Etsy fee calculator and compare.

Does annual billing change the math?

Yes — annual billing discounts the plan price, which lowers your fixed cost. The per-order processing rate does not change.

What profit margin is good for a Shopify store?

After product, shipping, plan, and processing, many healthy stores keep 20–40% of revenue. If your margin is under 15%, raising prices or cutting per-order costs usually beats chasing more orders.
