Salary to hourly (and back) without the spreadsheet
Job offers mix formats: one role posts $72,000, another $35/hour. A salary to hourly calculator makes those comparable. The industry shorthand — divide by 2,080 — assumes a 40-hour week across 52 weeks. That ignores holidays and PTO in the denominator on purpose; it is a standardized yardstick, not a promise of hours you will work.
When employers quote 2,040 hours, they may be aligning to an internal payroll convention. Part-time offers need custom hours (for example 20 × 52 = 1,040). Compressed schedules and nine-month academic roles also need custom inputs. PlainCalc exposes all three modes so you are not locked into a hidden constant.
Paycheck estimate caveats
The tax percentage field is deliberately naive: you type 22% or 30% and we scale gross periods. Real take-home depends on filing status, state/local tax, benefits elections, and wage bases for Social Security. Use it for ballpark budgeting, then verify with a payroll preview. More detail: salary ÷ 2080 hours.
Pair with overtime math
If the role is nonexempt and regularly runs long weeks, convert salary to hourly, then open the overtime pay calculator to stress-test total compensation. For freelancers comparing W-2 offers to shop profit, keep the Etsy fee calculator nearby.
Frequently asked questions
How do you convert salary to hourly?
Divide annual salary by hours worked per year. A common full-time assumption is 2,080 hours (40 × 52). Some payroll teams use 2,040. You can enter a custom annual hour count for part-time or compressed schedules.
How do you convert hourly to salary?
Multiply hourly rate by annual hours (e.g., $30 × 2,080 = $62,400). This ignores OT, bonuses, and benefits — it is a base-pay sketch only.
Why 2080 vs 2040 hours?
2,080 is 40 hours × 52 weeks. 2,040 appears in some HR systems (sometimes approximating unpaid time off). Neither is universally “correct”; pick the convention your employer uses or model both.
Is the paycheck estimate accurate for taxes?
No. The optional tax % is a blunt net estimate you enter yourself. Real withholding depends on W-4, state tax, FICA, pre-tax deductions, and local rules. Use payroll software or a tax professional for filing.
Does this include overtime?
Not in the salary↔hourly conversion. Model OT separately with the overtime pay calculator once you have an hourly rate.
