How EV charging cost really breaks down

An EV charging cost calculator answers two questions: what did this plug-in cost, and how does that compare to gas on a per-mile basis. Energy cost is simply kWh × price. Confusion starts when apps show $/minute on a DC fast charger, when state of charge is nonlinear near the top of the battery, or when home rates include time-of-use periods.

PlainCalc keeps home and public rates side by side so a road-trip top-up is comparable to overnight Level 2. Enter the kWh the car or charger reports when you can; otherwise estimate from battery percentage × usable pack size. Efficiency (mi/kWh) from your trip computer beats the window-sticker MPGe for real driving, but MPGe remains a useful fallback (we divide by 33.7 kWh per gallon-equivalent).

Home vs public in practice

Residential rates in many US areas land roughly in the teens of cents per kWh; public DC can be several times higher before idle fees. That gap is why most owners charge at home and treat fast charging as convenience. Walk through numbers on EV home vs public charging cost. For appliance loads that share the same utility bill, use the home electricity cost calculator.

Limits of this model

We do not amortize wall-connector installation, solar offsets, demand charges, or gas-price parity beyond optional per-mile electricity cost. Those belong in a broader TCO sheet. Still, a transparent session cost is the right first step before debating fuel savings online.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate EV charging cost?

Multiply kilowatt-hours used by your price per kWh. Example: 40 kWh × $0.16/kWh = $6.40. Use home rate for Level 2 garage charging and a higher public rate for DC fast charging.

What is cost per mile for an EV?

Divide electricity price per kWh by miles per kWh (or derive mi/kWh from MPGe ÷ 33.7). If you get 3.5 mi/kWh at $0.14/kWh, cost per mile ≈ $0.04.

Should I use battery size or session kWh?

Either works if you know the energy delivered. A 75 kWh pack charged from 20% to 80% uses about 45 kWh, not the full pack. Prefer the kWh shown on the charger or car trip computer.

Why are public chargers more expensive?

Networks price for hardware, demand charges, idle fees, and membership tiers. Always enter the posted ¢/kWh (or $/min converted carefully) for that session.

Does this include home charger install cost?

No — only energy cost per charge or per mile. Amortize hardware separately.
