Pricing backward beats pricing forward

Forward pricing — pick $29.99 because it looks nice, then discover you kept $19 — leaves money on the table or silently kills margin. Backward pricing starts from the profit your business needs and solves for the price. The fee stack isn't flat (6.5% here, 3% + $0.25 there, $0.20 per listing), so the required price isn't profit + costs + a guess — it's about 9.5% above that on a typical sale.

Watch the Offsite Ads scenario

Toggle the Offsite Ads scenario to price for the worst case: a 15% attributed sale on a $30 item adds ~$5 in fees. If your margin can't survive an attributed sale, your price is too low or your ad settings need attention. The Etsy ad profitability calculator goes deeper on the ads question.

Then sanity-check the market

The math gives you the price you need; the market decides what you can charge. If the required price is above comparable listings, cut costs (materials, shipping) before cutting your profit target — or differentiate the product so the price is justified.

Frequently asked questions

How do I price an item on Etsy for a target profit?

Add up every cost — materials, your shipping cost, fees, ad spend — then solve for the list price. This calculator does it by inverting Etsy's fee stack: enter your target profit and costs, and it returns the required price.

What price do I need for $20 profit on Etsy?

With $6.50 materials, $4.20 shipping cost, and $5 charged shipping, about $29.42 — roughly $3.72 goes to Etsy fees on the order.

Should I include the $0.20 listing fee in pricing?

Yes — it's small per sale but real, and it renews. The calculator includes it by default; uncheck only if you're modeling renewals separately.

How do Offsite Ads change my pricing?

An attributed sale costs 12–15% of the order on top of normal fees. Price with the Offsite scenario toggled on to see the worst-case required price.
