How to estimate Amazon FBA profit (carefully)
An Amazon FBA fee calculator is only useful if it stays humble. Referral percentages differ by product category; clothing, beauty, grocery, jewelry, and electronics accessories often use tiers. Fulfillment fees are not a single number — they follow size tiers, weight, and sometimes apparel or peak adjustments. Storage, returns, inbound shipping, and PPC can dominate contribution margin even when referral + FBA look fine.
PlainCalc asks you for sell price, a referral % (preset or custom), a fulfillment fee you supply, and product cost. We apply a $0.30 referral minimum when modeling US defaults. We intentionally do not ship a fake dimensional-weight table that would go stale and look more precise than it is.
Category presets we include
Presets cover common flat rates sellers recognize: ~15% for many Home & Kitchen / general categories, ~8% for many consumer electronics and computers, ~12% for some automotive/industrial, ~17% for clothing above typical low-price bands. Tiered categories deserve a custom percentage or, better, Amazon’s own calculator. See a worked walkthrough: Amazon 15% referral example.
What this tool leaves out on purpose
Monthly storage, aged inventory surcharges, coupon fees, shipping to FBA, prep, PPC, and returns reserves are excluded so the core arithmetic stays inspectable. Add those as higher product cost or a separate spreadsheet once the unit economics clear a hurdle rate. Cross-check with our Etsy fee calculator if you sell on both marketplaces.
Frequently asked questions
What is an Amazon referral fee?
A referral fee is Amazon’s commission on a sale — typically a percentage of the total sales price, with a per-item minimum (often $0.30 in the US). Rates vary by category: many sit near 15%, consumer electronics are often lower, and some categories use price tiers. This calculator uses a flat percentage you choose or enter.
Is this the same as Amazon’s Revenue Calculator?
No. Amazon’s official FBA Revenue Calculator (and Seller Central fee previews) are authoritative. PlainCalc is a rough planning estimator for quick what-ifs. Always confirm size-tier fulfillment fees and exact referral mapping in Seller Central before ordering inventory.
What should I enter for FBA fulfillment fee?
Use Amazon’s fee preview for your ASIN or a comparable size/weight tier, or paste a recent per-unit fulfillment fee from your payments report. FBA fees change with dimensions, weight, apparel vs. non-apparel, and peak surcharges — we do not invent a size chart here.
Does referral fee apply to FBM as well?
Yes. Referral fees generally apply whether you use FBA or fulfill yourself (FBM). FBA adds separate fulfillment (and possibly storage) fees. This tool focuses on referral + one FBA fulfillment field + product cost.
Why is there a $0.30 minimum?
Most US categories charge the greater of the percentage or $0.30 per item. Low-priced goods can see an effective rate higher than the sticker percentage. Our estimator applies that minimum when sell price is greater than zero.
